Defying the fake news – Rebutting the Top 5 Myths about Infra-Red Heating

Infra-Red is gaining traction as the go-to heating strategy of choice for both top-up heating and complete buildings, both residential and commercial.  Yet, despite its advantages, misconceptions still persist about what is a very simple but innovative technology that meets the requirements of both modern-day consumer demand for efficient low-cost heating and Government policies for moving the country towards Net Zero emissions. Like most ‘fake-news’, once people get ideas in their heads they can grow to mythical proportions, and it can be difficult to get them to change their opinions. So we’d like to take this opportunity to rebut the top 5 myths about Infra-Red heating.

Myth 1: Infra-Red Heating Radiation Is Dangerous or Harmful to Health

One of the most common myths is that Infra-Red heating is dangerous because it involves ‘radiation’. Fair enough, that's a word that can often trigger concerns, especially in the context of nuclear power. However, in the case of Infra-Red, it is simply nonsense. Infra-Red heat is a type of electromagnetic radiation, similar to that emitted by the sun but without the harmful UV rays. Infrared heating is a form of radiant heat that’s entirely safe, common in saunas and medical therapies for years, where it has been used to promote better circulation and joint relief.

Myth 2: Infra-Red Heaters Only Heat Objects, Not the Air

Whilst it's true that Infra-Red radiations primarily warm objects and surfaces directly, rather than the air itself, it doesn’t mean they leave the air cold. When walls, floors, and furniture absorb Infra-Red energy, they release that heat back into the air over time. This ‘secondary warming’ helps maintain a comfortable room temperature. Unlike traditional convection heaters that heat air first, Infra-Red heating reduces the loss of heat through drafts or ventilation, making it more efficient in the long run.

Myth 3: Infra-Red Heating Is Inefficient Compared to Traditional Heating

This couldn’t be further from the truth. Infra-Red heaters are actually more efficient in many situations because they reduce the amount of energy lost in heating escaping air. Indeed, Infra-Red heat is absorbed directly by people and objects, which means less energy is wasted, and warmth is felt almost immediately. Moreover, modern Infra-Red technology converts almost 100% of electricity into heat, offering high efficiency and minimal running costs, especially when used with smart thermostats and zoned heating systems.

Myth 4: Infra-Red Heaters Are Only for Industrial or Outdoor Use

In the past, large, glowing Infra-Red heaters were mostly seen in warehouses, patios, and outdoor spaces in the hospitality sector. This created a misconception that they aren't suitable for homes or modern domestic interiors. That’s total nonsense and today's Infra-Red heating panels and bars are sleek, stylish, and perfect for indoor use. Wall-mounted, ceiling-mounted, or free-standing, they come in various designs (including mirror or picture panels), and operate silently, making them ideal for bedrooms, living rooms, bathrooms, and offices.

Myth 5: Infra-Red Heating Is Expensive to Install and Maintain

While the upfront cost of installing Infra-Red panels or smart IR bars might seem higher than plugging in a space heater, long-term savings can be significant. Actually installation is often straightforward and doesn’t require plumbing or ductwork, especially in renovation projects. Maintenance is also minimal since there are no moving parts or filters to replace. Over time, the efficiency and longevity of Infra-Red systems typically offset the initial investment. When combined with renewable energy sources like solar panels, operating costs can be drastically reduced or even eliminated.

All Things Considered…

Infra-Red heating is a forward-thinking, energy-efficient solution that offers many benefits from lower running costs to a healthier indoor environment. As with any emerging technology, myths and misunderstandings can cloud public perception. But when you actually sort the fake news from reality it becomes clear that Infra-Red heating is not only safe and effective but a smart investment for modern living.
